North Carolina has no process server license. In-state service is by the sheriff of the county where service is to be made or another person duly authorized by law under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 1A-1, Rule 4(a). A private person 21 or older who is not a party and not related by blood or marriage to a party may serve only after a proper officer returns the process unexecuted under Rule 4(h1), or where the clerk appoints a suitable person because no proper officer is available, refuses, neglects, or is interested under Rule 4(h). Outside North Carolina, a non-party age 21 or older may serve. The directory currently covers 100 counties and 3 courthouse listings.

Frequently Asked Questions
No license is required, but in-state private service is not the first route. Rule 4(a) directs service to the sheriff or another person duly authorized by law. A private person 21 or older who is not a party and not related by blood or marriage to a party may serve only after a proper officer returns process unexecuted under Rule 4(h1), or after clerk appointment under Rule 4(h). Outside North Carolina, a non-party age 21 or older may serve.
Routine private process service in North Carolina typically costs between $75 and $150 for three to five attempts. Sheriff service costs approximately $30 per item served. Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro area rates are in the middle of this range. Request bids from multiple verified servers on the Mighty Process Server platform.
Under N.C. R. Civ. P. 4, the summons must be issued within 5 days of filing the complaint and must be served within 60 days of issuance. If service is not completed within 60 days, the summons may be extended via endorsement, alias summons, or pluries summons in additional 90-day chains. Failure to serve and extend the summons properly will result in it being dormant.
Not as a general in-state route. Rule 4(a) provides for service by the sheriff or another person duly authorized by law. A private person 21 or older who is not a party and not related by blood or marriage to a party may serve only after a proper officer returns process unexecuted, or after clerk appointment because no proper officer is available, refuses, neglects, or is interested. Outside North Carolina, a non-party age 21 or older may serve.
If personal service cannot be completed, North Carolina allows substitute service by leaving documents at the defendant's dwelling with a person of suitable age and discretion. Service by certified or registered mail with return receipt is also authorized. After due diligence, the court may authorize service by publication — three consecutive weeks in a qualified newspaper.
